“Africa’s Biggest Street Party”
Set in Cross River State, the Calabar Carnival blends modern spectacle with ancient Efik folklore and coastal heritage. Literarily interpreted as a modern expression of ancestral reverence, the festival incorporates elements of the traditional Ekpe secret society and coastal water spirit veneration. Major competing bands—such as Passion 4, Masta Blasta, and Calas Vegas—use elaborate costuming and dynamic choreography to dramatize thematic stories of African identity, environmental awareness, and unity across a 12-kilometer parade route.
